About Us

Cliff Moss and Grace Thomson, great friends thanks to pickleball,  decided it was time to catch up with our local communities that have superior courts and a unified organization for members.  We are joined by Greg Brown, Ceal Barry and Paul Beique to complete our Board of Directors for the time being.

Our Objectives
  • Promote the game of pickleball in Boulder County.
  • Establish rules for open play that works for both the city and members.
  • Effectively represent the pickleball community with government and private groups.
  • Maintain a website, newsletter and social media for members
  • Organize social activities, tournaments and round robins exclusive to members
  • Work to increase designated courts in the area and maintain the courts already provided.
  • And more to come...

Meet the Board Members

Cliff Moss

I have lived in Boulder for the past 50 years and am a graduate of  CU. I grew up in the swamps of Florida, followed by a term in the Navy. I have lived in a number of places, including New York, San Francisco, England and Malaysia, but have always maintained a home in Boulder. I’m a widower with two wonderful children and four promising grandchildren.

My career was working in high tech for companies such as IBM, StorageTek and Siemens. I retired 20 years ago. I’m not sure what I used to do for those companies, but I think that’s the ultimate goal of retirement.

After retiring from softball and basketball, I found pickleball four years ago, an amazing social activity. My time today revolves around travel, pickleball and the Senior Auditors program at CU, a great program if you have not tried it. I now look forward, with your help, to making the BOCO Pickleball Club a great program for the many people who live in Boulder County.

Grace Thomson

I am a transplant from New Jersey, Exit 80 on the Garden State Parkway, to be precise. I ventured to Colorado after graduation from the University of West Florida with a master's in recreation administration. In high school, I played basketball for a state championship basketball team. As an adult, I have competed on multiple competitive senior volleyball teams nationally and locally.

For most of my adult years, I owned A Formal Affair wedding shop, located across from Boulder High School. I spent much of my spare time fundraising for various nonprofit organizations in Boulder. More recently, I have worked as marketing and sales director for Mountains Edge Fitness. Now mostly retired, I manage multiple properties as corporate rentals and Airbnb.

I have two children in Colorado. My son, Tyler, owns Abo's Pizza in South Boulder. My daughter, Bre, works in the medical field.

My  passion has now transitioned to pickleball because of the unique sense of community and accessibility. I continue to play volleyball, but no longer travel out of state to compete. My desire to improve our pickleball courts and increase communication among players has driven me to participate in the formation of this club.

Greg Brown

My family moved to Boulder in 1964. Shortly after graduating from CSU, I moved to Montego Bay, Jamaica, to manage a scuba diving business. After that, I moved to Dallas for two years, then to San Francisco, where I lived for six years. In 1992, I returned to Colorado and have lived here since. My first professional career, which spanned 25 years, began in San Francisco and ended in Boulder. During this time, I worked for a large, publicly held corporations as a tax accountant. My second professional career was spent working in the Controller’s Office at the University of Colorado Boulder, where I worked with many wonderful people, including fellow board members Ceal and Paul.

My paddle/racket sport experience includes many years playing paddle tennis on a court my dad built in our backyard. I played racquetball for 10+ years beginning in high school. In 2016, I started playing pickleball and have had the opportunity to play with many great folks here and around the country. When I retired from CU Boulder in 2021, I set a goal to play pickleball in every state. I’m currently at 12 states and counting. Kathy, my wife, is also an avid pickleball player. We have two adult sons, Quintin and Will.

I served on the Boulder Community Pickleball Committee for five years. As a board member, I look forward to building on what the committee accomplished.

Ceal Barry

Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, I have lived in Boulder for 39 years. I was the women’s head basketball coach at the University of Colorado Boulder for 22 years (1983–2005), and before that was the head coach at the University of Cincinnati. After 28 years of Division I coaching, I transitioned to supervising multiple sport programs at CU and served as the university's senior woman administrator. I also worked closely with the Big 12 Conference Office, the Pac-12 Conference Office and the NCAA in various roles advancing women's championships.

As a high school and college athlete, I competed in basketball, field hockey, volleyball and softball. I am a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the University of Cincinnati. Since retiring in 2020, I have played pickleball at the Boulder rec centers. I golf at the Lake Valley Golf Club in Niwot and am a member of the Ladies League there.

My partner of 16 years, Liz Garfield, is also an avid pickleball player.

Paul Beique

I began playing pickleball at the South Boulder Recreation Center in 2014. I walked on the court a complete newbie, and Kathleen Danna and Carol Smoot patiently taught me the rules. Everything hurt the next day, but I was hooked. A few years later, a group of us formed the Boulder Community Pickleball Committee to advocate for our sport and offer free lessons to new players.

I enjoy the camaraderie of the game, the good-natured ribbing and the many opportunities to be humiliated by players 20 years older than I am. Among my other interests: hiking, camping, biking and film photography.

Pre-pickleball, I grew up in Bristol, Connecticut, and earned a journalism degree at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, where I later taught as an adjunct professor for 15 years. I was a full-time copy editor and page designer at The Burlington Free Press for 23 years. Today, I am senior editor in CU Boulder’s communications office, where I have worked since 2016 on all marketing material, and some college and school magazines and executive communications.

I live in south Boulder with my wife, Barbara. My stepdaughter, Fiona, is a researcher with the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health.
